happy easter, eggs

Slovenian artist, Franc Grom creates egg art using an electric boring tool. The results are stunning and as laborious as the finest of craftsmen from centuries past. The eggs that Grom creates have approximately 2,500 to 3,500 holes (he has been known to drill up to17,000 in one piece). The results are simply amazing. Who would have thought that something so delicate could be made even more fragile and precious.

Free Style Blowmoulding
This project explores the field between craft and industry, which results in products combining the qualities of unique craftsmanship with the properties of industrial production; uniformity, fast production and low costs.

‘Freestyle Blowmoulding’ proves these qualities are not incompatible, but can be combined to form an aesthetic whole of balanced contrast.

By pressing air into PVC tubes and pre-form tubes (the half-product of which soda bottles are made), new product for domestic use are created.

The raw, industrial, materials are artistically formed into stylish products.

These products fill a new dimension between craft en industry. They are easily reproduced, but each’ shape will be unique. The shaping of the product is a partly controlled in production and is partly left to chance.

Eva Solo Smiley Bowl

The latest new design product from Eva Solo can only put you in a good mood. The Smiley bowl always smiles at its surroundings, and it is always ready to lend a helping hand to hold nuts, sweets or all the stuff that you carry around in your pockets.

Eva Solo Smiley is designed by Claus Jensen and Henrik Holbæk the two designers behind the recognized Danish design firm Tools. As usual, the product is yet another well-conceived solution from the talented designer. In fact, with Smiley, you get two bowls in one. The outer bowl invitingly presents pistachio nuts or caramels, while the inner bowl is perfect for the empty shells and the wrapping paper.

The bowl has deliberately been designed so that it produces a smile, and it is made of several layers of clear, colored glass. Smiley is available in popular colors like lime, orange, turquoise, red and black.

Skew Bookcase by Smansk Design Studio

These funky pink shelves from Swedish designers Smansk debuted at last month's Stockholm Furniture Fair. Still only a prototype, each shelf is made from a single modular piece. When multiple pieces are rotated and joined together, it creates the alternating sloping shelves...

Samova Tea?

Animal Shelter

The largest animal shelter of the Netherlands (2007) houses 180 dogs and 480 cats. The building is isolated to reduce noise from the barking dogs. That is also why the shelters for the cats are stacked upon the dog-houses. In the centre of the building is a large open space – an outside play area. The colours in the building skin are derived from a pixelated print of grass.

Ninja Matryoshka

pantone-matryoshka

Sweet Mother Russia has blessed the world so much in the way of culture and the arts. Mikhail Baryshnikov and Yakov Smirnoff are just some of the national treasures the former Soviet Union has had the decency to share with us, though ballet and cold war humor are not the only contributions we cherish from our comrades. One of the most notable of Russian crafts is that of the Matryoshka, or nesting doll principle. Famously perfected by Fabergé in the late 1800's the craft lives on today with Russian Designer Yar Rassadin whose Pantone Matryoshka collection takes inspiration from both the Pantone color matching system and a minimalist UFO style, making for a uniquely modern twist on the nearly 120 year old art form.

FILL IN THE CAT

Year: 2006
Participants: Ricardo Casas, Héctor Esrawe, Emiliano Godoy, Cecilia León de la Barra, Óscar Núñez

ABOUT THE PROJECT:
Three characters disappear from large, solid white blocks, and their absence suddenly makes them important. The resulting emptiness is filled with the user's belongings and through this action the silhouettes' meaning shifts. The pieces suggest a continuous play between interaction and representation, where daily use generates a continuously changing story: a cat that reads Italo Calvino, a book filled with coins, a living room where birds come to eat the cake's crumbles…
