Cristiano Cora by Avi Oster

Cristiano Cora is a hairdressing salon in New York, designed by architect Avi Oster.
The vision for this project evolved gradually. Our aim was to create a space that would be distinctly appealing to women; something slightly curved, clean, and stylish, but at the same time comforting and transformational. I began to think about the concept of a shell or cave, or some very basic protective and comforting form that folds around a being, and this motif found its way into the design of the space.

We tried to keep everything clean and to eliminate as much information or distraction besides the experience of the client and the stylist. For instance, there is a separate wet and dry room for laundry services which is kept discreet by a hidden door. We also designed the floor to curve upwards to enable easy sweeping of the hair to the vacuum system’s nozzles at the edge of the floor.

The experience of the client is one of transformation. At Cristiano, the simplicity of the design encourages the client’s focus to be on the inspiring experience of becoming transformed. In this salon, I wanted to create the sensation for a woman to enter a protected space and emerge transformed; purified, indulged, comforted, and relaxed.

The most unique material we used in this project was the Newmat Light Stretch Ceiling. Developed in France and made from latex, it provides a stretch ceiling that you can use to cover large spaces and create a kind of skin. We also sourced hairdressing industry fixtures from the Maletti Group and Ross Lovegrove, the vacuum system from Imperium, hardware from Valli & Valli, and bathroom fixtures from Duravit.

The floor space is 400 square meters. The project was completed in February 2008, with the total cost coming in at $280,000.

Le Meurice revelation by Philippe and Ara Starck

Franka Holtmann, General Manager of Le Meurice, has chosen Philippe Starck to restore Le Meurice’s
heritage to its rightful prominence, and in doing so exalt its riches and beauty. His response is an «invisible transformation» with considerations of colour and light, a new interpretation of furniture, a play on transparency and movement, while Ara Starck has painted a monumental canvas…

The Third Space

If you thought China’s opening ceremony was impressive for its scale and teamwork then spare a thought for the 52 German design students who were handed the knee weakening task of creating a temporary 200sqm world that tries to translate sociological terms like self-portrayal, community and retreat into tangible spatial situations. As impressive as it is, the real treat is in the details. The entire space was created by lashing together almost 1.3 million cable ties. The result is nothing short of amazing. Visitors are invited to explore the surreal landscape of cocoons, webs and light called “The Third Space” that took a staggering 16,870 hours to complete.

Jaime Hayon for Champagne Piper-Heidsieck

“July 30th Whiskey Blue at W Los Angeles - Westwood debuted a month-long Piscine experience which is complemented by an installation by world-renowned Spanish designer Jaime Hayon - whose work transcends the borders of art and design. Crafted from Suryln, a material commonly used in molded luxury goods, the striking piece morphs into a satellite champagne bar that is inspired by the brand’s iconic and extravagant red color. ”

Is it weird that i wish i had this in my future studio? NOTCOT regulars know how i love the glossy lacquered clean modern look of Jamie Hayon’s designs ~ (and am still lusting after that bath tub!) Remember his previous collaborations with Champagne Piper-Heidsieck? He created a beautiful champagne bucket and champagne bowl, and has continued the styling and colors of those pieces into this larger piece which i suppose is more like a champagne bathtub and lamp in one. The glossy quilted texture of the lampshade just keep drawing me in. See more images on the next page!

Limes Hotel, Brisbane

Located in the ultra-hip Fortitude Valley (no kangaroos here!), the Limes hotel has a unique approach to luxury and service. With only 21 rooms, designer Alexander Lotersztain decided to focus on guests' primary travel requirements rather than traditional, 5-star standards.

Add to that a gorgeous, innovative exterior, and you have a new definition of the luxury hotel experience. Each lodge-type room comes equipped with custom Corian kitchen benchtops and toilette vanities, timber be heads, and custom aluminum door handles.

But the super high-tech, custom-made hotel rooms aren't the only draw for those interested in the Limes' high-end hotel experience. In an area of Brisbane already known for it's trendy cafes, shops, bars, and restaurants, the completely open air roof top bar and roof top cinema fit right in with the surrounding sophisticated urban ethos. Forget the kangaroos--I'm going to Australia for the cosmopolitans!
